The North Star - St. Paul University Manila's Research Online Hub

HomeWelcome VisitorsMay 25, 2008
This is St. Paul University Manila's research hub online. Please feel free to check out the site and send us any message that may help us serve you better.

We would like to share a quote: "Computers and compassion. Computers are magnificent tools for the realisation of our dreams, but no machine can replace the human spark of spirit, compassion, love, and understanding." From Gerstner (Submitted by Rajesh K Choudhary, staff grade surgeon, Darlington / Retrieved from BMJ VOLUME 332 20 MAY 2006 bmj.com)

St. Paul University Manila is set on becoming the premiere higher education institution to advocate compassion research.

The North Star is our metaphor for compassion, which is our constant guide to action. We navigate our location on earth relative to the north star.

Research Themes from 2008 to 2011:

2008-2009 - "Compassion as Caring"

2009-2010 - "Compassion as Culture"

2010-2011 - "Compassion as Capital"

2011-2012 - International Compassion Research Conference in St. Paul University Manila.

The link to the papers of Brian Bantugan that were presented in the ASEAN Inter-University Conference on Social Development, and the paper of Mary Eloisa Esmenda that will be presented in the 18th International Conference on Pacific Rim Management can be found in the RESEARCH-RELATED EVENTS UPDATE SECTION.

We congratulate Mr. Aldrin Darilag, last year's Nursing's research Coordinator for being assigned as the new Dean of the Graduate School of the university. Likewise, we salute Dr. Ramos, for being assigned as the new Dean of the Undergraduate College. God bless you both.

"We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe." -- Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor

SPU MANILA PARTICPATES IN DLSU
GRADUATE RESEARCH CONFERENCE
Contributed by Riza Flor Mosquera
SPU Manila Research Associate

On 17 April 2010, SPU Manila participated in the “2nd Graduate Research Conference in
Education” at Bro. Andrew Gonzales Hall, De La Salle University. The said event was attended
by Sr. Rosanne Mallillin, SPC, VP for Academic Affairs; Dr. Aldrin Darilag, Dean of the
Graduate School Program; Mr. Jonathan Aldanza, Ms. Demetria Panganiban, and Ms. Jem San
Miguel, 2010 graduates of the Graduate School Program; and Ms. Riza Flor Mosquera, the
new research associate of SPU Manila Institutional Research and Knowledge Office, who
attended on behalf of Dr. Brian Bantugan. The research forum was organized through the
joint efforts of the DLSU College of Education and the La Sallian Institute for Development
and Education Research.
“Understanding by Design” (Ubd), a new
teaching tool designed by International
Educators and authors Grant Wiggins and Jay
McTighe, was presented by Dr. Miguel Q.
Rapatan, De La Salle University Director for
Academic Support for Instructional Services and
Technology (ASIST). He explained how Ubd can
improve teaching strategies by utilizing a
“backward design” where its outcome or the
desired result is presented first, followed by the
assessment of evidence and planning for the
lesson. According to Dr. Rapatan (shown making
his presentation), the Department of Education
hopes to have a full-swing implementation of this tool in all schools in the Philippines starting
school year 2010-2011.
In the afternoon, there were simultaneous presentations of theses accomplished by
graduate school students from the invited universities. It was divided into three groups:
Counseling and Educational Psychology; Science Education; and Educational Leadership and
Management, where students from the graduate school program of SPU Manila presented
their theses. The following papers were presented: “Living with the Albularyos in Selected
Areas of Las Piñas” by Jonathan Adanza (M.A. in Nursing, 2010); “The Effects of Integration
of Indigenous Games on the Socio-Emotional Dimensions of Children with Development
Disabilities” by Demetria Panganiban (M.A. in Special Education, major in Development
Disabilities, 2010); and “The Effects of Mozart Music on the Socio-Emotional Dimensions of
Children with Developmental Disablities” by Jem San Miguel (M.A. in Special Education, major
in Development Disabilities, 2010).

Also present in the seminar were teachers in secondary, tertiary, and graduate levels,
clinical instructors, and researchers and administrative staff from different schools and
universities, including De La Salle-Zobel, Arellano University, University of Manila, La
Concordia College, Paco Catholic School, Siena College and Magallanes National High School.
In a chance interview, Dr. Auxencia A. Limjap, chair of the Science Education
Department and one of the organizers of the seminar, stressed the importance of such a
forum that serves as a venue for graduate students to present accomplished or on-going
research papers and to receive critiques to help improve their work. When asked for a
comment on the use of “Understanding by Design (Ubd)” as a teaching tool, she said she
firmly approves of the idea because it is an innovative way to attain the mission-vision of a
university. She also added that this tool provides specific ways, procedures, and frameworks
for better teaching.
According to Dr. Darilag, St. Paul University Manila will come up with a Graduate
Research Congress some time in May to present the 21 accomplished theses of graduate
students across the different programs.

South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium Research Committee
Holds 1st Meeting for SY 2009-10
By Brian Bantugan
July 8, 2009

The first meeting for SY 2009-2010 of the South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium (SMI-IC) Research Committee was held in Adamson University at 2:00 pm. It was attended by representatives from Philippine Women’s University, Adamson University, De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Philippine Normal University, St. Paul University Manila (represented by Brian Bantugan), De La Salle University, Philippine Christian University and Lyceum of the Philippines University. The agenda included the election of the new Chair of the research committee and a discussion of the proposal of the previously discussed student engagement survey initially proposed by St. Paul University Manila.
The Chairmanship, a 2-year position, was relinquished by the Ms. Ma. Victoria C. Hermosisima of Philippine Normal University to Ms. Venusmar C. Quevedo of Adamson University. It was noted in the meeting that the coordinator who takes on the leadership post of a research project in the SMI-IC has always held the Chairmanship position in the research committee of the consortium. It was, thus, decided by the group to pass the responsibility to Ms. Quevedo who is the principal proponent behind the student engagement survey. The proposal was further refined in the meeting through an evaluation of the scope and problems of the project. The topic was initially deliberated on in a workshop facilitated by Dr. Reyes of DLSU last February 20, 2009. It is now being developed as a proposal for funding by the Commission on Higher Education Zonal Research Center NCR 1. At the end, the group agreed to produce a descriptive research which can be expanded as a correlational study at the institutional level.

Institutional Research Officer meets with Academic Research Unit Representatives
By Kristine Punzalan and Brian Bantugan

8 July 2009
The Institutional Research Office, through Mr. Brian Bantugan, conducted two separate meetings last July 8, 2009 at the Research Office to discuss urgent matters regarding research and the participation of the concerned offices.
Early in the morning Mr. Bantugan with Ms. Marichen Dychangco, Nursing Program Chairperson, and Ms. Rowena Ramos, Level 4 Coordinator, met and focused on the participation of their program in the upcoming DOST exhibit to be held on the 22nd of July 2009. The said exhibit will showcase different science and technology related research works at Robinson’s Place Manila. The need for a forum aimed at guiding their faculty members in doing research works was a concern raised by Ms. Dychangco. A possible orientation for Nursing faculty members might be addressed in June to address the issue.
The “Hilot” project was also discussed and the parties agreed explore the project by making a survey of interested students and a possible seminar on that topic. The time requirement for government and commercial research grants were also mentioned. It was suggested that the student researchers whose research are related to the agenda of any granting institution should already be guided at the proposal phase of their research, which happens prior to their senior year. Lastly, the participation of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences in the President’s Agenda Forum was encouraged by Mr. Bantugan. Since the Nursing students have a different activity period, it was suggested that they conduct a forum that is suitable to their time and fitting in their interest.
Later in the morning, Mr. Bantugan met with Dr. Irma Bustamante , Dean of the Undergraduate College. He reiterated the pertinent matters that were discussed earlier in the morning. Mr. Bantugan requested that he be given a forum where he can present the results of the Students Engagement survey to the faculty members, since this will aid in making the faculty members aware of the profile of students, especially on activities in and out of campus.

SPUM Institutional Research Office Attends Research Journal Seminars
By Kristine Punzalan and Brian Bantugan

Mr. Brian Bantugan and Ms. Kristine Punzalan, SPUM’s Institutional Research Director and research assistant, respectively, attended the International Seminar on Journal Publishing last 16 June 2009 at Pan Pacific Hotel Manila. The Seminar had the theme of “Professional Journal Editors, Key to Publishing Culture.” It sought to gather the editors of journals to learn more about journal publishing through case presentations by and discussions of editors of medical journals in the country and abroad.

Mr. Charles Raby, the Technical Officer of Translation and Knowledge Management of the World Health Organization pointed out that these meetings are great opportunities to collaborate peers in the country and has a key role of facilitating access to information and research. He also pointed out that the purpose of the seminar is to acquire ideas and solutions in publishing journals.

The first set of case presentations was on the topic of Journal Publishing. The presenters were Journal editors from the Philippines. Dr. Theodore Vesagas from the Philippine Journal of Surgical Specialties presented their journals’ editorial procedures and emphasized the idea that “editors determine the tenor of the journal.” He discussed the importance of continuous education both in the particular fields of study and editing. Pertinent to their process are the workshops that they conduct, among others, “Common Problems in Editing Manuscripts” and “Scientific Misconduct”.

Dr. Jose Ma. Avila, Editor of Acta Medica discussed the history of their journal. He said that their journal started out in 1939 with a very low budget and with neither policies nor guidelines. Recently, however, they did a revamp and even required, as a University Policy that no faculty member will be given permanency without research works. He also discussed that Acta Medica was recently relaunched in the Department of Science and Technology, with an increased budget and quarterly issues with 10 to 12 articles per issue.

Dr. Maria Trinidad Vera discussed the importance of the criteria set by the editorial board on the selection of articles. She also discussed the importance of the presence of the editorial board members and their particular duties. According to her, this helps a lot in the proper management of their journal.

The three presenters entertained questions from the audience after all of them presented their cases. There were variety of issues raised, but the focus was particularly on the issue of plagiarism. The panel pointed out that this is one of their concerns and that it is a problem that is very difficult to deal with. They also gave emphasis on the gray areas of plagiarism and the role of peer reviewers in countering it.

The second part of the morning seminar was a Panel Discussion on Professionalizing Health Journal Editorship. The speakers were editors of International journals. The first speaker was Dr. Jeong-Wook Se, Editor of Korean Journal of Pathology. He emphasized the global view when it comes to journal publishing. He pointed out the importance of the idea that “editors should not do everything,” because they need to be present, particularly, in the selection and evaluation of articles. He juxtaposed this with the local view and practice where the editor is the one responsible for everything, from the writing of articles up to the distribution of the journals. He also argues that journals should be open for all contributors and that the old notion that only the members of the society are allowed to submit should already change.

Professor John T. Arokiasamy, Editor of the Medical Journal of Malaysia discussed the effect of membership on the readership. According to him, making the journals “open access” is a challenge to the editors since “membership cuts down readership”.

Lastly, Dr. Wilfredo CG Peh, Editor of Singapore Medical Journal, talked about the three kinds of plagiarism and the stages when plagiarism is detected. He pointed out that it is the job of the editors to detect plagiarism.

The morning session ended with lunch and a press conference. Mr. Bantugan had to leave at this point to attend another meeting with C&E publications. In the latter meeting, the opportunity to be a part of the Philippine Online Journal was discussed. Various Higher Educational Institutions such as University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, U-Belt schools and other members of the South Manila Inter-Institution Consortium members attended the meeting.

Catholic University of Korea officials visit SPUM
By Kristine Punzalan and Brian Bantugan

Last June 9, 2009, the officials of St. Paul University Manila (SPUM), headed by the President, Ms Wynna Marie Medina, welcomed the officials of the Catholic University of Korea (CUK). The two parties engaged into a meeting regarding opportunities for Filipino graduate students to study in CUK as early as March next year.

SPUM’s representatives in the meeting, headed by the President, Ms. Wynna Medina, included Sr. Flordeliza Deza, SPC, Director of International Relations Office; Dr. Irma Bustamante, Dean of Undergraduate School; Dr. Aldrin Darilag, Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Runvi Manguerra, Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Pricila Marzan, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences and Mr. Brian Bantugan, Director of Institutional Research and Planning.

The CUK delegation was composed of Rev. Johan Yeong- Sik Pahk, the CUK President, Professor Kwang-Kook Park, Dean of the Office of Academic Affairs; Prof. Victoria Hyunkyung Jo, Professor for the Institute of Foreigh Languages Education; Prof. Sang-Yoon Ma, Dean of the Office of International Affairs; Ms. Jeong-hee Kwon, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Prof. Emely Abagat, a Filipino who will be teaching in CUK.

Sr. Flordeliza Deza, SPC, presented an overview of the history and accomplishments of St. Paul University Manila. She highlighted the beginnings of the religious congregation and its foundations, recent developments in the University, its accomplishments that included prominent alumnae from different fields, and the various international programs which SPUM is running. Ms. Medina also mentioned the education graduates from SPUM who were sent to teaching English in Korea, Mr. Bantugan’s visit to Sogang University in 2007, and the university’s inclusion in the Peace Forum, Kyung Hee University’s UNESCO awarded research journal.

Prof. Ma, meanwhile, gave a brief introduction on CUK and its graduate school program that particularly seeks applications from excellent SPUM graduate students. Fr. Pahk, on the other hand, emphasized the university’s desire to expose the university to English speaking Filipinos through the graduate program. Ms. Medina pointed out that this will be a good opportunity for Filipino students to be exposed in Korea, and at the same time enhance their education in their chosen fields of study there.

Prof. Ma also cited their President’s good relationship with Filipinos as instrumental in the development of the graduate program which focuses on Business Administration, International Studies, Public Administration, Computer Sciences and Engineering, and Information, Communications and Electronic Engineering, where subjects are taught in English. Fr. Pahk, meanwhile, remarked that the Philippines is the “America in Asia,” and as such, is a country of competent English speakers. He further pointed out that CUK is opening its doors especially to Filipino students because Filipino students are serious in their studies, are Catholic and CUK wants to help Filipino students who want to obtain further studies abroad but do not have the means to afford it.

After the meeting, the group was toured around the campus. They visited the chapel, memorial, different offices, Drop-inn Center, the University Hotel, selected classrooms and the science and nursing laboratories. They were awed by the Chapel and its history, the University Hotel facilities, the clean restrooms, the compactness and use of space in the campus, and Sr. Flor’s tokens of appreciation.

CUK will be accepting about 25 students for the scholarship program this year. The students who get accepted in the program will be given free air fare, exemption from the payment of tuition, compensation in part time jobs as English teachers for Korean students; internship and job opportunities in Korean companies after finishing the program, and, for those who will obtain a PhD degree, a job opportunity as a teaching staff at CUK.

Other opportunities for exchange between SPUM and CUK were also presented by SPUM for exploration between the two parties.

SPUM Institutional Research Office Visits an Adopted Community

for Its Pasig River Research Initiative
By Kristine Punzalan and Brian Bantugan
Last 11 June 2009, Mr. Brian Bantugan and Ms. Kristine Punzalan, SPUM’s Research Director and Research Assistant, respectively, along with Ms. Ivy Coronel from the Environmental Advocacy Office of SPUM, Ms. Marilyn Barrameda, a social worker in the university’s Community Development Center, and Mr. Lamer Morales, Chair of the Education Program went to Baranggay 895, Sta. Ana, an adopted community of the University. The ocular visit was in lieu of the possible research project being designed by SPUM in collaboration with ABS-CBN’s Kapit-Bisig sa Pasig Program and the university’s Health and Livelihood Assistance Mission.

During the visit, it was evident that the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission already started their part of the project which is to clean out the river side where shanties belonging to families in the University’s adopted community stood. The portions of the riverside community that is sought to be cleaned out are marked by green paint. It was seen that some of the shanties, once marked by green paint have already been reduced to rubbles and some of the families have been relocated to another settlement.

The University intends to help out in the said project in various ways, such as tree planting and cleaning up. On the part of the Institutional Research, a documentation of the community life of the residents is on the drawing board. This will come hand in hand with scientific testing of water toxicity levels throughout the whole year and the creation of a database on health problems that the communities have experienced throughout their lifetime.

The group met a few residents from the community, each person having their own story to tell about the Pasig River. One resident, Kagawad “Ompong,” toured the group around the community. While showing the pertinent potions of the community, he told the group that he has been a resident of the community since 1972 and was a witness of the Pasig River’s former glory. He said that it use to be a picturesque sight with pristine waters. Another woman named Lola Amelina who was born in 1938 and whose eldest son is already 54 years old has also been a witness to the changes of water of Pasig River and some reclamation activities along its banks. These stories and many others point to a possible historical documentation which can help provide a picture of a community in constant transition by the river.

The Institutional Research Office intends to visit the site on a regular basis within a span of one year, to document not only the daily life of the residents and the gradual changes in the river but also big events, like the Karakol which is observed on the last Sunday of June.
